GRIEF OF SEPARATION
No water is comparable to the green sea;
No cloud to the clouds of Mt Wu.
No woman is worthy of my backward glance:
Partly due to ascetic practice, partly you.
The first two sentence “No water is comparable to the green sea, no cloud to the clouds of Mt Wu.” is a famous aria of love. It means that having experienced the sea of incomparable depth and breadth, he is no longer attracted to other waters. After experiencing the lingering clouds and rain in Wushan, the scenery elsewhere is not called clouds and rain. The first two lines of this poem are allusions to the depth of the poet’s love.
In the third sentence, the poet uses flowers to describe people, indicating that even though he walks among the colorful “flowers”, he does not bother to look back at the beautiful “flowers”. The poet uses an analogy of the flower, to show his devotion to love.
The last sentence goes on to say that the reason why the poet is “lazy to look back” is partly because the poet has seen throughout the world and has the intention of monasticism. The other half is because the poet has only his wife in his heart.
